REPEAL IRV Debate link

Video of REPEAL IRV debate is up on Ch17 @ http://bit.ly/bmEw7R

~Features Mark Larsen's example of going to the store to buy skim milk. Says he would settle for 2% but does not want whole milk at all. So he must understand how voters feel who went to the polls, voted for skim or 2%, and found whole milk in their fridge the next morning!

~Highlight was Sandy Baird repeating over and over, IRV is NOT A REAL RUNOFF, IT IS A RETABULATION, A HYPOTHETICAL, A FALSE MANUFACTURED MAJORITY.

~See Keri Toksu smirk, smirk and declare IRV to be so simple even a third grader can do it -- but she herself can't explain the tabulation and she forgets how many candidates were running.
IRV Repeal Debate

~Hear Chuck Seleen say:

I urge you to vote yes on Question 5 to repeal IRV as a method of electing the mayor of Burlington--
  • To return to a simple affirmative vote for your candidate of choice
  • To elect the candidate with the most popular support
  • To do away with the IRV tabulation system that disenfranchises voter
  • To return to a voting method that creates voter confidence
  • To reinvigorate candidate debate
  • To give voters a choice to reevaluate the top two candidates if an election is close

What Sandy Baird repeated over and over again is "You get two votes" and she wasn't talking about IRV, but about what she proposes to replace it.

I thought you guys called yourselves "One person, One vote". In reality you are advocating "One person, Two votes". One vote for the original election and then the loser gets another whack at it on Runoff Day.

Can't you be honest with your own labels and rhetoric?

Once again, this is an example of how people every, single day make preferencial rankings all the time. This issue is NOT "complex" at all, period.

"Sandy Baird repeating over and over, IRV is NOT A REAL RUNOFF, IT IS A RETABULATION, A HYPOTHETICAL, A FALSE MANUFACTURED MAJORITY."

No it really isn't. Let's face the facts here...Baird is a basically has-been in Burlington politics that was opposed to IRV before it was ever enacted in the first place & that backed Kurt Wright in the last election. She is a prime example of those out there that are simply upset that they didn't get their way in the past. Well, boo-hoo...

"See Keri Toksu smirk, smirk and declare IRV to be so simple even a third grader can do it -- but she herself can't explain the tabulation and she forgets how many candidates were running."

LOL...what a pathetic attempt to smear pro-IRVers...you're going to LOSE because of this kind of childish behavior people!

"Hear Chuck Seleen"

...who is another example of someone that apparently supported Andy Montroll & is now merely upset that he didn't win the last time around. Again, boo-hoo...

"To return to a simple affirmative vote for your candidate of choice"

...which voters can do RIGHT NOW with IRV...it's called bullet-voting, and it's a perfectly fine thing to do when using an IRV system.

"To elect the candidate with the most popular support"

...which is *exactly* what IRV does in the first place!

"To do away with the IRV tabulation system that disenfranchises voter"

...which is simply a LIE that's been repeated over & over by those that simply don't know what they are talking about, period.

"To return to a voting method that creates voter confidence"

...which, in so many other words, simply means..."We are upset at Bob Kiss, and we're willing to use him as a scapegoat to repeal IRV now."

"To reinvigorate candidate debate"

...which is another completely phony issue. Do you really like negative campaigning?? Really??

"To give voters a choice to reevaluate the top two candidates if an election is close"

...and waste taxpayer money on an enterprise that will ALWAYS have a much lower turnout than an IRV election.

"Can't you be honest with your own labels and rhetoric?"

I think the answer to that question is exceedingly obvious at this point. These anti-IRV whiners are really, really getting desperate. The "Where's Bob?" signs were the cap on a truly pathetic campaign on their part.
