Pro-IRV can't get the facts straight! Dis-service to voters.

Mark Larson is a nice person, and I'm sure he would tell the truth if he knew it. His facts are wrong and he can blame his busy schedule and his sources for that, but misleading voters in a city-wide debate is wrong. A state representative must check FACTS!

Here's a fact check on statements about the repeal of IRV voting in Pierce County, WA.

Traditional voting is so simple, even a dog in third grade could do it!

ya know. i have to confess that the pro-IRV folks didn't come with their knives sharpened. they didn't even bring knives.

Mark's main case was that the Majority Candidate (presumably the IRV winner) is more beholden to the electorate than a mere plurality candidate. it's true but weak. before beheldness or responsibility should come natural authority or mandate to rule. the very technical reason that IRVers can point to say that Kiss has more mandate to rule than Wright is also the same technical reason for a mandate for Montroll to govern than Kiss.

Keri Toksu mentioned, but didn't push the issue that so many fewer voter turn out for the Delayed Runoff. reduced voter turnout is less indicative of the will of the people than increased turnout. that is one of the main reasons for rejecting delayed runoff when you have sufficient information on Election Day to determine who would win the runoff with the full turnout and unchanged voter position. Keri did make one completely false claim in saying that "no one" has to worry about electing their last choice candidate because they voted for their favorite. that's only true for the majority and was shown to be untrue for the "GOP Prog-hater" minority.

i cannot see how Chuck Selene can conclude that there was reduced voter turnout in the last two mayoral elections (with IRV) compared to the previous non-IRV elections. they earlier numbers are smaller than the later numbers.

lastly Sandy Baird kept repeating "you get two votes" and she wasn't referring to IRV, but what she wants to replace IRV with. Delayed Runoff is One person Two Votes. why do you call your organization "One Person, One Vote" when what you are advocating is TWO votes (unless there is a clear majority and then no one is arguing who the winner is)?

"the very technical reason that IRVers can point to say that Kiss has more mandate to rule than Wright is also the same technical reason for a mandate for Montroll to govern than Kiss."

Nonsense. The last election was between 5 different candidates...it was not a series of imaginary two-person races.

"Keri did make one completely false claim in saying that 'no one' has to worry about electing their last choice candidate because they voted for their favorite. that's only true for the majority and was shown to be untrue for the 'GOP Prog-hater' minority."

Again, hypothetical elections in alternate universes don't count...real ones do!
